Not long ago I posted a piece about the developments in the long standing debate around the proposals by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) for listing of trout as invasive aliens in their National Environment Management Biodiversity Act (NEM;BA). I also highlighted some of the concerns of trout fishermen and others in the trout industry should the legislation be enacted and implemented in its current form. But, ignore for a moment the personal enjoyment we as individuals derive from hunting trout and consider the potential negative financial and social impacts their proposals will have on trout related businesses, their staff and the families they support – it is massive! Only yesterday I came across an outstanding short video by Wolf Avni, amongst other things, a well known South African flyfisher, hatchery-man, author and photographer. Someone who in five minutes sums up succinctly the points made by many of us in our objections to the Minister of the DEA on the financial, the livelihood of many and other related aspects. What Wolf so aptly explains is if the legislation goes ahead, he like others in the trout business will have no alternative to look to more conventional farming operations for a living, all of which are likely to have a far greater impact on the environment and biodiversity than trout have ever had and will ever have in the future.
But Wolf does a far better job of conveying these points than I can so I urge you to take 5 minutes of your time and watch his video and then, GET INVOLVED IF THE FUTURE OF TROUT AND ALL IT EMBODIES IN SOUTH AFRICA IS GOING TO SURVIVE INTO THE FUTURE. Keep abreast of latest developments through FOSF and Trout South Africa ….. just Google their names.
